“Singing the Psalms: How to Chant in the Christian Contemplative Tradition”
by Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault

Fifteen hundred years ago, Saint Benedict established a system of prayer and work for the monks in his Italian monastery – that monastics worldwide still follow today. At the center of this prayerful tradition is the integration of body and spirit with the chanting of the psalms. On Singing the Psalms Episcopal priest Cynthia Bourgeault teaches us how the 150 psalms of praise and supplication to God can awaken us with rich spiritual and psychological insights.  For many years she has been singing the psalms with the Camaldolese Benedictines of Big Sur, California and with the monks of St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado. These teaching are a direct result of her spiritual experiences and are an excellent addition to any practice group or solitary.

Here is a sample from the beautiful teaching series Singing the Psalms: How to Chant in the Christian Contemplative Tradition by Cynthia Bourgault. In this audio sample Cynthia talks about Centering Prayer. If you are unfamiliar with Centering Prayer you may want to check out the video I published a few weeks ago of Fr. Thomas Keating’s fabulous teaching on the subject.
